Many people in Taiwan's Kaohsiung county are in mourning after the news that nearly 400 people, missing since a huge mudslide engulfed the village of Hsiaolin, are now presumed dead.
The area has been devastated by numerous mudslides and flooding caused by Typhoon Morakot last weekend, which dumped half the island's annual rainfall over the course of four days.
The Taiwanese military is continuing to use helicopters to rescue villagers left stranded after roads and bridges were swept away.
Some survivors have spent several days with limited food and water awaiting help. Critics say the government should have acted faster but Taiwan's president says everything possible is being done.
It could take three years to repair the dozens of bridges and scores of sections of road damaged by flooding, the transport ministry has said.
Volunteers are helping with the clean-up mission in Qishan, the town at the centre of rescue operations, but much remains to be done.
The mudslides have damaged many buildings and swathes of agricultural land. The Taiwanese government says reconstruction could cost more than $3.5bn (2.1bn).
