Taiwan's treacherous rescue operation

Taiwanese rescuers have been working around the clock to help villagers in communities which have been cut off after roads and bridges were washed away by Typhoon Morakot.

A rescue worker trying to cross raging flood waters in Taitung had to be rescued himself after his inflatable boat overturned when a rope snapped.

In Jiasen township in Kaohsiung county workers fired a rope across a river as part of the rescue effort.

And in Chuchi township in Chiayi county, villagers struggled to carry supplies through rough terrain as rocks began to fall.
