Indonesia banker jailed for graft

The former governor of Indonesia's central bank has been sentenced to five years in jail for corruption.

Burhanuddin Abdullah was found guilty of using $10m (�6.2m) in bank funds to bribe lawmakers and pay for lawyers for bank officials facing graft charges.

Mr Abdullah, 60, whose term as governor of Bank Indonesia ended in May, was also fined $23,600 (�14,700).

He is one of the most senior officials to fall foul of the country's recent clampdown on corruption.

Mr Abdullah has denied any wrongdoing and told the court he would appeal.

"I'm very disappointed with the decision and will file an appeal... I will never stop pursuing truth and justice," he said.

His sentencing came as Indonesia's Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) announced four more suspects in the case, including a relative by marriage of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

The KPK named Aulia Pohan, a former central bank official whose daughter is married to one of the president's sons, as a suspect in the investigation.
