Guangzhou: Sophie Cheng

Student Sophie Cheng introduces Guangzhou and describes her excitement ahead of the arrival of the Olympic torch.

Guangzhou is the capital of Guangdong province. It is a modern city with many skyscrapers - new buildings are always being built.

Sophie Cheng

Guangzhou is an open-minded place, it accepts people and things from all over the world.

Many people in Guangzhou come from other places around China such as Beijing, Shanghai, Henan province and even from as far away as Tibet and Heilongjiang province. Many foreigners live in Guangzhou as well.

It was one of the first cities to open its doors to foreign business. No matter who you are and where you are from, there is something in Guangzhou for you.

The people of Guangzhou are looking forward to welcoming the torch. I believe the torch is holy.

It belongs to everyone in the world who wants peace and who wants a beautiful world.

I remember when I first came to Guangzhou. I flew into 'white clouds' - the airport. I was struck by how beautiful and modern it was.

But although Guangzhou is so modern, there are still many old places, many traditional quarters. I enjoy all the cultures that you find in Guangzhou.

All the teachers and students at our school are eager to talk about the Olympics. It is the first time China has held such a grand activity.
