The Chinese government has strict laws on internet use |
China has shut down dozens of websites as part of a drive to stop online piracy, state-run media say. The authorities have closed down 76 websites and ordered another 137 to remove illegal material, the official Xinhua news agency reported.
There are no details about the contents of the websites.
Correspondents say China is under great pressure to stop the illegal manufacture of music, software and other goods.
The authorities have fined the owners of 29 websites a total of 789,000 yuan ($98,000), and are also pursuing eight criminal cases against website operators.
The move is part of a crackdown launched in September by the Ministries of Public Security and Information Industry and the ruling Communist Party's Propaganda Department, Xinhua said.
