Philippines army kills communists
New People's Army
The NPA is estimated to have 8,000 fighters
Philippines troops have killed at least 18 communist rebels in the country's north, after one of the biggest clashes in recent months.

Troops battled fighters from the New People's Army (NPA) near the town of Santa Ignacia, 150km (90 miles) north of Manila, an army spokesman said.

An army battalion surrounded the rebels and sparked a gun battle that lasted for several hours, he said.

Peace talks between the government and NPA were suspended two years ago.

The NPA, which has been fighting for 37 years, numbers about 8,000 fighters.

Philippines military spokesman Colonel Preme Monta said fighting broke out after civilians tipped off soldiers that a group of NPA rebels were in the area.

"We have recovered 18 bodies and assorted firearms from the scene," he said.
