Considering what our recent prime ministers have been like, I think Koizumi has done a good job. The issues I care about include crime and security and educational standards in Japan.
I was very concerned to read about the controversial Japanese textbooks that people in Korea and China found unpleasant.
The Japanese are a reasonable people and it's really important to spread the message that we do understand the truth about the past no matter what the controversial textbooks may say.
I think Koizumi is right about postal reform too. It's a problem that needs addressing soon.
I live in a quiet country village in Okinawa and the only financial institutions in our village are a farming co-operative and a post office, which happens to be privately owned.
Government post offices have too much power and influence when it comes to elections and gathering votes. It doesn't seem fair. So I believe reform is necessary.
But there are other issues too. We need a proper human rights bill in this country. Our current bill doesn't really define what human rights means. It doesn't live up to international standards.
