| | Friday, 23 August, 2002, 18:20 GMT 19:20 UK In pictures: Flooding in Asia Floods resulting from torrential rain continue to cause havoc in China, where the race is on to prevent the massive Dongting lake from bursting its banks. Cambodia and Vietnam have also suffered from severe flooding.  Despite clear skies, water levels are still rising and the battle to contain Lake Dongting continues  Millions of Chinese live near the lake or in its flood plain  More than 850,000 people are working round the clock to build defences around the lake  Soldiers have been mobilised to shore up dykes and embankments...  ...while local residents attempt to rescue what they can  But the vigil on the dykes continues, with thousands looking out for the slightest leak  Cambodia has also been affected, and is braced for further flooding  The Vietnamese have made the most of a lull in the rain to reach stranded people and start a huge clean-up | |
