Cambodian police clamp down on Glitter
Gary Glitter who was jailed in 1999
Glitter was convicted of possessing child pornography
Disgraced former rock star Gary Glitter has been ordered not to leave the capital of Cambodia without informing the police.

Glitter, 57, was questioned last week after police were tipped off about his 1999 conviction in Britain for downloading thousands of pornographic images of children.

He came under Cambodian police scrutiny after he allegedly failed to declare that he has been living in Phnom Penh for seven months.

His passport was confiscated last Sunday for not informing authorities about his previous convictions or his intentions to stay in Cambodia.

Deportation calls

It was suggested he may be deported, but police said he had signed an undertaking to inform them about any trip he might take outside the capital

His passport was returned on Thursday evening when he attended a police station in Phnom Penh.

Lt. col. Pol Pithey, chief of the Municipal Police's Foreigners Department, said he told Glitter to inform his office of any travel plans outside Phnom Penh "because his status is still under our consideration".

He said Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, had not been asked to leave the country because he had not committed any crime.

However, earlier this week, Cambodia's Minister of Women's Affairs Mu Sochua, said she wanted Glitter deported as soon as possible.

The country has a thriving sex tourism trade, with young girls being sold into the industry by their families.

Glitter served two months of a four-month sentence after admitting 54 charges of possessing child pornography downloaded from the internet.

The singer admitted making indecent images of children under 16 between January and November 1997.

Sex offenders' register

He had downloaded material that included images of girls as young as two being abused.

The conviction ended his pop career.

Glitter was released from prison in January 2000 and is on the sex offenders' register in the UK under his real name.

Glitter's visa for Cambodia, which has entry stamps into Thailand, Vietnam, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Venezuela and Columbia, is valid until October 2002, police said.

Glitter first came to Cambodia in 1997, but his most recent entry into the country is March of this year.
