| Sunday, 14 April, 2002, 16:32 GMT 17:32 UK Backpacker police in DNA probe ![]() Police believe Caroline Stuttle was thrown from bridge Police investigating the murder of a British backpacker in Australia have taken DNA samples from witnesses. The body of Caroline Stuttle, from York, was found under a bridge in the quiet Queensland town of Bundaberg last Wednesday. Police believe the 19-year-old was first the victim of a violent robbery and then thrown 65ft to her death. They are confident they will find her killer and hope the DNA samples could provide them with a breakthrough.
Meanwhile, Caroline's father and brother are reportedly on their way to Australia to arrange taking her body back to Britain. The Queensland Premier, Peter Beatty, has offered to meet her family if they make the trip. On Sunday, he described the murder as "a terrible tragedy" and an "embarrassment". This incident comes after seven British backpackers died in a deliberate fire at a hostel 30 miles away in Childers, two years ago. Head injuries A man seen following the backpacker just prior to her death is believed to have been involved in another disturbance in the town centre in the morning after. This man, spotted by a woman driving over the bridge on Wednesday evening, is described as being in his mid to late 20s, with stocky build and collar-length brown hair. An e-fit was released by police, which brought a good public response. The Bundaberg community has been stunned by the news of Caroline's death and is holding church services in her memory.
A book of condolence has also been organised. A man being questioned by police about her death is due to appear in court on Monday on drugs charges. But police have emphasised the 21 year-old-man is not a suspect. A police spokesman said: "We have received a lot of information in recent days but this man's information could prove to be the most significant." A post-mortem has confirmed Caroline died from massive spinal and head injuries. And there were minor injuries to suggest a struggle before her death. Her mobile phone and handbag are believed to have been stolen by her attacker. |
