| Wednesday, 28 November, 2001, 14:55 GMT Vietnam ratifies landmark trade deal The national assembly in Vietnam has ratified its long-awaited trade agreement with the United States, marking the final step in the process of normalization between the former wartime enemies. The deal will give Vietnam access to the United States market at the same low tariffs enjoyed by most other nations. It will also open up Vietnam to American traders. The BBC correspondent in Hanoi says there is an air of excitement in the business community there, as the deal marks a major step for Vietnam's engagement in global trade. The agreement will take effect after being signed by President Tran Duc Luong; this is expected within the next few days.
