Two British backpackers have been attacked by a dingo on the Australian island where a boy was mauled to death on Monday.

The two women were bitten and scratched by a male dingo on Thursday at a camp site on Fraser Island, Queensland state Premier Peter Beattie said.

The women did not need medical treatment and the dingo involved in the attack has been killed by park rangers.

At least 28 of the wild dogs have been culled after nine-year-old Australian Clinton Gage was savaged to death by dingoes and his seven-year-old brother badly bitten.

Swift attack

One of the British tourists, identified only as Katherine, was bitten on the legs and buttocks after she fell while the dingo was chasing her.

She said it happened so fast she did not see the dingo lunge at her.

"I don't even know where it came from," she told Australia's Channel Nine television.

The cull of the dingoes is going ahead despite opposition from Aborigine groups on the island.

A federal court on Friday rejected appeals to stop the killings.

Plans to stop tourists feeding the dingoes by imposing fines of up to 1,500 Australian dollars are being studied, officials said.

Missing tourist

Some island residents say tourists created the danger by feeding the animals, making them lose their fear of humans.

Meanwhile, the search for another British tourist missing on the island for over a month will resume next week.

Health care company director David John Eason, 46, failed to rejoin his tour group on 29 March.

Police say they have no reason to believe he has been attacked by dingoes.
