| Saturday, 23 May, 1998, 23:02 GMT 00:02 UK Sandinistas re-elect Daniel Ortega The main opposition party in Nicaragua, the Sandinistas, has re-elected the former president, Daniel Ortega, as its Secretary-General. Mr Ortega -- who was president from 1979 to 1990 -- said that he would work with his new central committee to renovate the party and win the next general elections in the year two-thousand-and-one. Besides Mr Ortega, there is only one other founding member of the Sandinista National Liberation Front on its central committee, Tomas Borge. Mr Ortega lost two presidential elections and has been dogged by allegations by one of his step-daughters that he had sexually abused her. He has denied the allegations.
