| Tuesday, 5 September, 2000, 17:14 GMT 18:14 UK Annan sets Millennium Summit agenda ![]() Kofi Annan rings a peace bell to officially open the General Assembly United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has set out his aims for the UN's Millennium Summit, which is expected to be the world's biggest gathering of world leaders. Speaking at a pre-summit meeting, Mr Annan urged delegates to "harness the symbolic power of the millennium to the real and urgent needs of people everywhere". More than 150 world leaders are expected to attend the summit, which officially opens on Wednesday at the UN headquarters in New York. Mr Annan spoke of his hopes that the summit would provide an agenda for action, and a forum for leaders to make progress on a range of issues. But, he conceded, he was under no illusion that a conference could change things on its own. Initiatives During the summit, leaders are expected to sign the 'Millennium declaration', which sets tough targets in eradicating war, poverty, and disease.
However, much attention is expected to focus on the sidelines of the conference, including US President Bill Clinton's continuing attempts to restart the faltering Middle East peace process. Mr Annan is also expected to take part in a debate on the need for greater dialogue between civilisations which is to be opened by the Iranian President Mohammad Khatami. Protests expected BBC United Nations correspondent Mark Devenport says security is extremely tight for the summit, during which over 90 rallies and demonstrations are expected to take place. One of the biggest is expected to take place when protesters opposed to the government in Iran gather outside the UN during an address by President Khatami. Thousands of police officers are on duty, and a number of streets have been closed. Trucks filled with sand have also been parked at nearby junctions to prevent possible car bomb attacks. |
