| Friday, 1 September, 2000, 21:42 GMT 22:42 UK Swedish journalists expelled from Cuba Three journalists from Sweden who were detained by the Cuban authorities on Tuesday have been expelled from the country and are now back home. The journalists said they had been subjected to lengthy interrogations and were held without food or water. They said the Swedish embassy in Havana had had to help them with bread, water and toilet paper. The Cuban government had accused the two men and a woman, who'd met independent journalists on the island, of encouraging subversive activities. The foreign minister, Felipe Perez Roque, said the Swedes had broken Cuba's laws by entering the country on tourist visas. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
