| Wednesday, 9 August, 2000, 13:40 GMT 14:40 UK Earthquake jolts Mexico ![]() An earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale shook Mexico City early on Wednesday morning. No casualties are reported, but the quake did cause power cuts and panic among people in some parts of the city. The National Seismological Service said the quake had an epicentre off the coast of western Michoacan state. Television reports said the earthquake was also felt along part of the western coast. In some areas, panicked residents rushed out of their homes when the tremors were felt. Susceptible Mexico City and surrounding regions like Acapulco have been susceptible to earthquakes in the past. On 21 July this year, Mexico City was struck by an earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale. In June 1999, an earthquake, measuring 6.7 on Richter scale, killed at least 16 people and more than 200. In 1985, a massive earthquake devastated Mexico city, killing at least 4,200 people. |
