Before the 2005 storm the New Orleans school district was one of the worst performing in the country - since then test results have improved dramatically.

Supporters of charter schools say that is is because two-thirds of all the children are now educated in their schools.

Charters are state schools independent of America's equivalent of a local education authority; set up by businesses and non-profits they are non-selective.

Ben Marcovitz, principal of the New Orleans Charter Science & Math Academy gave the BBC a tour of his school and spoke about the progress its pupils have made.
