This photo diary is by Martin Harrison, a UK water engineer, volunteering in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. It follows the work of a medical response team, HJCB Global, at the Baptist Haiti Mission Hospital.
Martin says: "A week on, and certain essential medical supplies are still not getting through. A doctor informs a patient, via a translator, that she must continue to wait for her operation." Photo: Martin Harrison
"Dr Eckehart Wolfe tends to a patient he gave blood to in the middle of the operation he himself was performing. There are no stocks of blood anywhere. The woman survived 24 hours but later died." Photo: Martin Harrison
"Doctors explain to this fearful woman brought in by the US military from a refugee camp the procedure they must perform. The lemon worn around her neck is a good luck charm." Photo: Martin Harrison
"A girl looks on apprehensively as Dr Steve Nelson examines x-rays of her broken leg." Photo: Martin Harrison
"We are seeing increasing numbers of casualties arriving with infected wounds." Photo: Martin Harrison
"The hospital morgue is full. Bodies are stored outside until collected by relatives. Bodies which lie unclaimed have to be placed in a mass grave that has been dug in the hospital grounds." Photo: Martin Harrison
"It rained yesterday on the mountains around Port-au-Prince. Whilst this brought much needed drinking water for some, it can increase the risk of spreading disease." Photo: Martin Harrison
"Madame Carfa, left, has worked tirelessly in the hospital to ensure doctors have all the materials required. She lost her home in the earthquake and was sleeping in the street until we found out." Photo: Martin Harrison
"Patients who have been treated are now being discharged and face an uncertain future as they return to home and family, or what is left them." Photo: Martin Harrison
