'Substantial damage' fears after Haiti quake

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake off the Haitian coast has rocked the capital and sparked a tsunami alert for the surrounding area.

Don Blakeman, from the US Geological Survey, said he expected "substantial damage and some casualties".

The earthquake was centred about 15km (10m) south-west of Port-au-Prince and was quickly followed by two strong aftershocks of 5.9 and 5.5 magnitude.
