Landslides triggered by heavy rain in areas around the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro have claimed more than 60 lives. In Morro da Carioca at least 12 people died when a section of hillside gave way.
Meanwhile the death toll from a landslide on the nearby island of Ilha Grande has risen to at least 26. Many victims had just returned to a holiday lodge after New Year celebrations when the tragedy struck.
Relatives of victims from both landslides held a collective funeral for their loved ones in Praia do Bananal.
Rescue workers have continued their search, with more bodies being recovered from the debris covering the luxury Sankay Lodge.
Witnesses said the lodge and nearby houses were swamped when a section of hillside some 300m across slid into the sea.
Wooden parts of the lodge could be seen on the beach and floating near the shore.
The mudslide scarred the hillside above the resort and stained the sea in the bay. Local officials have declared three days of mourning.
Friends and relatives of those still missing at the lodge face an anxious wait - officials say the death toll could rise to as many as 40.
