Snowstorm blankets US East Coast

A winter storm has gripped the eastern US, dumping more than 1ft (30cm) of snow in some areas, snarling up travel and cutting power supplies.

It has sparked emergencies in a number of states and cities.

Washington DC saw the largest snowfall ever recorded in a single December day and southern New Jersey its highest single-storm snow in almost four years
