New York welcomes a warship that bears her name. The USS New York's bow is forged with steel from the Twin Towers, destroyed in the attacks of 11 September 2001.
Thousands gathered along the Hudson River to remember those who died in the attacks and to get a glimpse of the ship as she entered the harbour.
The 684ft (208m)-long amphibious assault vessel has 7.5 tonnes of World Trade Center steel in her bow.
Watched by representatives from the city's police and fire departments, as well as the US military, the ship fired off a 21-gun salute near the site of the 2001 attacks.
The US Navy is to hold an official commissioning ceremony on Saturday for the new warship, which set off on its maiden voyage from Louisiana three weeks ago.
