Brazil will become the first South American country to host the Olympics, after Rio de Janeiro is chosen as the 2016 host city by the International Olympics Committee.
The city of Chicago, for which President Barack Obama and his wife had made an emotional bid, was eliminated in the first round, followed by Tokyo and then Madrid.
