A giant wildfire raging above Los Angeles grew in size on Tuesday, threatening some 12,000 homes and the lives of hundreds of firefighters.
The fire has spread over 190 sq miles (492 sq km) of brush land in the Angeles National Forest, north of Los Angeles.
Firefighters were in a race against time to prevent the flames leaping over fire-breaks in southern Californian forest.
Some residents returned to find just the charred remains of their homes and possessions.
Others fought desperately to try to save their homes, hosing down their roofs and property with water.
They are keeping a watchful eye, hoping the fire that has already claimed dozens of buildings would spare their homes.
Weary firefighters voiced hope that a break in searing temperatures would allow them to make inroads against the inferno.
Californias fire chief said crews were fighting for every foot that they could save.
Smoke and haze from the flames could be seen as far east as Denver, Colorado.
