Supporters of ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya converged on Tegucigalpa airport on Sunday.
The demonstrators tried to persuade security forces to let them through as Mr Zelaya tried to return home by jet from the US.
The demonstrators made Victory signs when Mr Zelaya's jet appeared in the sky.
But troops loyal to the self-declared new government blocked the runway.
Violence erupted as the army pushed back demonstrators and at least two protesters were killed.
Demonstrators pointed to bullet-holes as evidence of the ferocity of the clashes.
Graffiti near the airport called for the death of the new president, Roberto Micheletti.
Meanwhile Mr Zelaya was forced to land in neighbouring Nicaragua, from where he continued to El Salvador.
He was due to meet regional leaders in El Salvador. Argentina's Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner (R), Ecuador's Rafael Correa (L) and Jose Miguel Insulza of the Organization of American States flew in from the US for the talks.
