Injured indigenous Peruvians were being treated in hospital on Saturday in Bagua, after bloody clashes with riot police on Friday over Amazonian land rights.
Riot police had attempted to break a blockade of a highway, firing tear gas.
It appears that firearms were also used during the violence.
Protesters armed themselves with stones, spears and machetes.

As the police removed their dead, it emerged that protesters were holding other officers hostage.
Protesters say at least 30 have been killed, including children. But more than 150 have been injured, many with bullet wounds.
Charred vehicles on the highway testified to the ferocity of the violence.
