US President Barack Obama has said he is confident his $825bn (576bn) economic recovery plan will be passed by Congress.

He was speaking ahead of a House vote, saying he hoped to sign the bill in the next few weeks.

Republicans lack the votes to defeat Mr Obama's stimulus bill on their own, but could slow its progress, especially in the Senate.
