Hurricane Ike hits Havana

Havana has been battered by strong winds and heavy rain as Hurricane Ike swept across Cuba.

The capital has escaped the eye of the storm but thousands of people have been forced into shelters as winds toppled trees, damaged homes and brought power lines down in parts of the city.

Four Cubans have died since the hurricane first hit on Sunday.
