Candidates scramble for votes in a final push before the caucuses. The Des Moines Register lists 56 candidate events across the state, starting with a pancake breakfast with John Edwards at 5:15 am and ending with a midnight party hosted by Senator Barack Obama.

"Even the jittery pack of seasoned political operatives gazing into their BlackBerrys doesn't seem to have a clue which way the Iowa snowdrifts are blowing." Maureen Dowd on the Democratic race, in The New York Times.

The latest poll for Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby suggests both races are getting tighter. Democrat candidates Senator Barack Obama and Senator Hillary Clinton are deadlocked at 28%, with John Edwards close behind on 26%. For the Republicans, Mike Huckabee is on 28%, and his closest rival Mitt Romney is on 26%. The poll suggests Senator John McCain and Fred Thompson are tied on 12%.
