Canada has unveiled plans to spend $370m on an electronic system to improve security and speed up trade across the border with the US. Under the "electronic manifest system", road and rail carriers would submit cargo and crew information before arriving at the Canadian border.
The system will allow Canadian border agents to "make informed decisions", a government statement said.
The US has already made similar plans for goods entering from Canada.
"This will allow the Canada Border Services Agency to have the right information at the right time in order to make informed decisions," a government statement said.
More than $500bn worth of goods were exchanged between the two countries in 2005, according to Canadian data.
Some of the funding announced by Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day is to go to joint Canada-US planning to ensure trade moves across the long border even in the event of terror attacks.
