| Thursday, 6 January, 2000, 01:53 GMT Hillary moves out
By Philippa Thomas in Washington America's First Lady, Hillary Clinton, has moved out of the White House. Mrs Clinton is spending her first night at home in Chappaqua, New York - where she plans to spend most of the year campaigning for a seat in the Senate. The president was with her on Wednesday night; but for most of the time they will be apart. Separation fuels speculation It is not only the first time that a president's wife has run for office; it is the first time she has lived in a separate residence. Hillary Clinton's move to a wealthy New York suburb is a necessary one: she needs to fulfil the residential requirement before she can bid to represent the state. But the Clintons' physical separation has of course fuelled speculation, after years of talk about the president's infidelity. Mr Clinton even added to the rumours himself, joking that perhaps he should run for Congress, to improve his chances of seeing his wife in the office. Media scrutiny At least he will be able to follow her progress in the media. Some 20 cameras were in Chappaqua this week to film the removal men. Every detail about the Clintons' luxurious house has been dwelt upon: the five bedrooms, four bathrooms, even a swimming pool. Hillary Clinton is said to be "very excited" about the move - and she is expected to launch her full-time campaign within weeks. |
