The couple are said to have a special affinity with Venice

The American film-maker, Woody Allen, has married Soon-Yi Previn, the adopted daughter of one of his former lovers.

The wedding ceremony took place in the Italian city of Venice on Monday.

The couple had asked the authorities there to keep the wedding secret, but a New York newspaper leaked the news.

Their affair began while Woody Allen was in a long-term relationship with Soon-Yi's mother, the American actress, Mia Farrow, who had adopted her at an early age.

Soon-Yi is 35 years younger than the 62-year-old Allen.

The disclosure of the affair - six years ago - led to a highly public legal battle in which Woody Allen had to defend himself against allegations of child abuse. He was cleared of all charges.

Mr Allen is famous for his films and comedy performances. He is also known for his regular clarinet perfomances at a New York jazz venue.
