Seven youths died and five others were injured during a riot at a detention centre in southern Brazil in which hostages were taken, officials say. Police in the Curitiba area were called in after youths protesting against conditions at the centre set fire to one of the buildings.
Firefighters tackling the blaze found the bodies of four inmates who had reportedly been killed by the rioters.
Three other bodies were discovered later after the rioters surrendered.
Brazil's Globo TV said police were called to the Sao Francisco reform school in Piraquara at 2100 local time on Thursday after youths set mattresses alight and took hostages.
Riot police set up negotiations and the rioters surrendered five hours later.
Part of the building was destroyed in the rebellion, the TV report said.
Brazil's prisons are often overcrowded and have a reputation for violence and poor conditions - factors behind frequent riots and killings involving inmates.
