The authorities in Brazil have announced that they are to deploy military police in several slum areas in Rio de Janeiro, following several days of riots.
The governor of Rio de Janeiro, Anthony Garotinho, said that the police would act swiftly to prevent any further violence, which he said had been orchestrated by drug traffickers.
Protestors torched several vehicles and blocked a main road following the death of a young slum-dweller during earlier clashes with police.
