More than 150 leaders of the Maya community have ended their first international meeting in Mexico with a call to their governments to respect their traditional way of life.

At the end of the two-day event, Maya representatives from Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico demanded free cross-border movement between countries where the Maya live, and access to ceremonial sites to carry out their rituals.

These sites, which were built by their ancestors before the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors, are now archaeological ruins visited by thousands of tourists every year.
