US jury convicts Cuban hijackers
The hijacked plane
The ageing plane landed at Key West
A jury in the US state of Florida has found six Cuban men guilty of hijacking a plane from Cuba to the United States in March.

The six - some armed with knives - took control of the 1940s DC-3 plane as it headed from Cuba's Isle of Youth to the capital, Havana.

The flight was intercepted as it entered US airspace, and forced to land at Key West airport in Florida.

The Cubans could face life in prison. Sentencing was set for February.

During the trial prosecutors and defence attorneys focused on whether or not the plane was really hijacked.

In-flight service

The prosecution said the crew was forced at knife-point to divert the plane while the defence argued that crew members went along with a staged hijacking.

The flight carried 37 people, including the six defendants and six crew members.

Fourteen passengers opted to stay in the US afterwards. Nobody was hurt.

Defence attorneys argued that the hijacking was a flight to freedom, and crew members were part of it.

The defendants served snacks and drinks during the flight, they said.
