Once more people feel betrayed. The new economic measures have been disastrous.
Banks are closed. We have a bank holiday for we do not know for how long. The cabinet has resigned and we don't have a new minister of economy. We don't know what is going to happen. People are in the square outside Congress protesting, banging pots. 'More could be done' We know that tough measures are needed. But the measures which are being taken don't take into consideration that half the population of Argentina live below the poverty line. They can't even cover the basic things - they can't eat or go to school, they don't have enough money to pay for medicines. There are 10 or 20 kids dying each day. We know that the situation is very serious, but we also know that more could be done for the people. It is not that I, or people in general, want the military to come back. But there is not much of a democracy left in Argentina. President Duhalde says something one day and another the next - we don't think we are heard. Democracy is not much more than a word for us anymore. |
