| Tuesday, 19 March, 2002, 23:18 GMT Colombians jeer president at funeral ![]() Pastrana pledged to bring the killers to justice The Colombian president has been heckled as he arrived at a cathedral to deliver the eulogy at the funeral of Archbishop Isaias Duarte, who was shot dead on Saturday. Politicians, church leaders and thousands of the archbishop's followers - many of them dressed in white - gathered in the southern city of Cali to see him laid to rest. Speaking before a packed congregation at the San Pedro Cathedral in the city of Cali, President Andres Pastrana pledged to bring the church leader's killers to justice.
One mourner in the crowd accused the police of ignoring calls for protection for Archbishop Duarte. "We will not forget that he was the one that put the archbishop against the wall," he said of Mr Pastrana. Correspondents say feelings are running high over the archbishop's killing, with many people questioning the government's ability to guarantee public safety. Outspoken critic The shooting of Monsignor Duarte as he was leaving a church where he had celebrated a wedding has shocked a country wracked by civil war for the past four decades.
Local media reports suggest that official suspicions focus on drug traffickers - he had accused several candidates in this month's congressional elections of being financed by traffickers. Colombia's two main rebel groups - the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and the National Liberation Army - have denied any involvement in the shooting. Both groups denounced the crime. Since the weekend, thousands of people have filed past his glass-covered coffin in Cali's cathedral to pay their respects. The Colombian authorities have arrested more than 300 people since Saturday, but only five are reported to be still in custody. |
