| Tuesday, 5 March, 2002, 08:49 GMT Prosecutors to simulate shoe bomb ![]() Prosecutors say the device could have downed the plane Prosecutors in the United States say they plan to recreate the explosive device found on the shoes of Richard Reid - the man accused of attempting to blow up an American-bound plane last December.
They plan to submit the evidence at the trial, which has tentatively been set to start on 4 November. Mr Reid, a Briton converted to Islam, is accused of attempted murder and attempted destruction of an airliner. He denies the charges. Simulation Assistant attorney Timothy Feeley unveiled the plan to Judge William Young at the Boston court during a pre-trial hearing on Monday.
Judge Young has not yet decided whether the video-taped simulation will be admitted as evidence in court. He gave prosecutors 60 days to give the defence details of its planned simulation and the names of experts who would testify. He also gave the defence another 60 days after that to make similar disclosures to the prosecution. Trial date The judge also set 4 November as a tentative date for the beginning of the trial - although lawyers will meet again in June for another pre-trial conference. Mr Reid allegedly tried to set fire to explosives in his shoes while on an American Airlines flight from Paris bound for Miami. He was overpowered by passengers and sedated by an on-board doctor until the flight was diverted to Boston's Logan Airport, where he was arrested. The FBI says it has discovered forensic evidence that indicates Mr Reid had help making the explosives. But the alleged shoe bomber is said to have told investigators that he acted alone in building the device, using a recipe from the internet. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Americas stories now: Links to more Americas stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||
