Condit 'not central' in intern case
Congressman Gary Condit. Democrat of California
Gary Condit took a polygraph test voluntarily`
Police in Washington say a congressman questioned four times in connection with disappearance of a US Government intern is "not the central figure" in the case.

Interest in California Democrat Gary Condit was aroused after a police source said Mr Condit admitted having an affair with 24-year-old Chandra Levy.

We've gathered a lot of information...and nothing has led us to Chandra Levy

Deputy Police Vhief Terrance Gainer
Ms Levy, who lived in Mr Condit's Modesto constituency, has not been seen since 30 April.

Mr Condit has denied any involvement with Ms Levy's disappearance and police have repeatedly said he is not a suspect.

Not a suspect

Detectives say they are now unlikely to ask Mr Condit to undergo a second polygraph test, despite earlier indications they were not satisfied with a test the congressman took voluntarily.

"You have to understand that we've gathered a lot of information in this - a lot of electronic information, telephone, banking records - and nothing has led us to Chandra Levy," Washington deputy police chief Terrance Gainer said.

Police search for clues
An intensive search has failed to yield any clues
"Although interesting to a lot of people, [Mr Condit] is not the central figure in this," he added.

Police, meanwhile, say a Pentecostal minister who claimed he also had an affair with Ms Levy fabricated the story.

Otis "OC" Thomas told the FBI in May he was a mystery older man Ms Levy's mother Susan believed her daughter was seeing.

Mr Thomas, however, retracted the story in an interview with the Washington Post newspaper.

Police draw a blank

Ms Levy, an intern at the Bureau of Prisons, was last seen when she went to cancel her membership at a health club near her Washington apartment.

Police say she was working on her computer at home on 1 May and investigators are investigating websites she downloaded for clues.

Despite an intensive search, including abandoned buildings and woodland close to Ms Levy's home, police say they still have no idea what happened to her.
