| Saturday, 28 July, 2001, 16:52 GMT 17:52 UK French make big Caribbean bust ![]() The French navy has seized a cache of cocaine with an estimated street value of $1.3 billion, the French interior ministry has announced. Working with Venezuelan, UK and US assistance, a French navy frigate stopped a Venezuelan-registered fishing trawler in international waters off the coast of French Guiana.
French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin said the raid showed "the success of international co-operation in the fight against drug trafficking". The vessel, the Carolina, was intercepted on Friday morning local time and searched by customs officials, gendarmes and police. International operation The US Coast Guard and British Special Services assisted the French navy.
In June 2000, they seized 2.2 tonnes of cocaine off the coast of the Caribbean island of Martinique - like French Guiana, an overseas French possession.
