New police strike hits Brazil

Authorities want to avoid the violence of Salvador
Police in the Brazilian state of Alagoas have gone on strike, in a continuing national crisis over pay.

The strike began on Wednesday, just a day after police in the neighbouring state of Bahia ended a similar 12-day campaign after accepting a 21% pay offer.

There are fears that the Alagoas strike may lead to a repetition of the violence seen in Bahia's capital, Salvador.

The action in Bahia led to a complete breakdown of law and order in the city, and troops were deployed on the streets.

The riots sparked by the strike caused the deaths of over 30 people. Many others were injured and at least 100 shops were looted and wrecked.

Pay increase

Those striking in Alagoas want a minimum monthly payment of $480, compared to their current salary of $160 - a 200% increase.

Alagoas Governor Ronaldo Lessa is said to have offered pay rises of up to 20%, but the strikers have so far not responded.

Businesses are fearing the worst - many stores and banks in the Alagoas state capital of Maceio locked their doors throughout Wednesday.

Fearing an increase in crime, football matches were suspended, public transport was curtailed and petrol stations closed early.

Other strikes

Police discontent is a national problem. Forces in six other states are also on strike, or threatening strike action to campaign for better wages.

The threat of further strikes still hangs over Salvador
In the north-eastern state of Pernambuco, police have been on strike for the past 16 days, with authorities refusing to negotiate.

In neighbouring Para, forces have threatened to strike if they do not receive a 30% increase by the beginning of August.

"Police are underpaid and undertrained, and are at their wits' ends," said Eduardo Brito of the Violence Studies Nucleus at the University of Sao Paulo. "When you see a protest succeeding, it's easy to see why it could spread."
