Mr Rojas was later taken into custody on charges of aggravated battery.

The case was considered as a routine domestic violence incident until Mr Rojas told police his date of birth: 13 April 1901.

A spokesman for Miami-Dade Corrections Institution told the British Daily Telegraph newspaper: "Seventies yes, eighties yes, nineties questionable, but 100 no ... never seen a 100-year-old here."

Mr Rojas has been released on $1,500, bail and is due to appear in court on 23 May.

Previous offender

Mr Rojas is already known to police having spent three days in prison when he was 98-years-old, following an incident in which he threatened a female bus driver with a fake sub-machine gun.

Lieutenant Angel Machado, a Miami fireman who knows the couple, said the relationship between Mr Rojas and Ms Ali had been "on-and-off" for about six years.

Ms Ali has convictions for cocaine possession, burglary, battery and disorderly conduct.
