| Wednesday, 14 March, 2001, 23:55 GMT 7 killed in Jamaica gunfight Police in Jamaica have killed seven men in a gunfight at a house near the capital, Kingston. The victims died during an early morning raid by officers looking for suspects in the recent killing of a policeman. Police said they returned fire after the occupants of the house began shooting. They said a weapon recovered from the scene was one stolen from the policeman who was shot earlier this month. Correspondents say Jamaica has one of the highest murder rates in the Caribbean, largely linked to control of drug-trafficking and gang-related violence. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
