Canada lifts Brazilian beef ban

Canada has lifted a ban on imports of Brazilian beef imposed earlier this month because of fears over mad cow disease.

The move came after an investigations in Brazil found no evidence of the disease.

Brazil had threatened Canada with trade sanctions over the ban which it said was motivated by an ongoing dispute between the two countries over subsidies for aircraft makers.

Canada said the embargo was a matter of public health.

The Canadian ban forced the United States and Mexico to also bar Brazilian beef under the terms of the North American Free Trade Agreement, NAFTA.
