Malnutrition is rife after weeks without aid

Aid agencies in southern Sudan say the future is looking increasingly bleak for more than one million people threatened with food shortages in Bhar el Ghazal province.

An official of Norwegian People's Aid said a desperate situation was being compounded by government bombing of civilians.

Another aid organisation, World Vision, appealed to the Sudanese government to lift flight bans in parts of Bhar el Ghazal, to allow more food drops.

And a Roman Catholic cleric, Monsignor Caesar Mazzolari, urged the international community to act quickly, saying current food aid was like a drop in the ocean.

The United Nations and other groups have been warning of a growing risk of starvation for some months, unless there's more aid from the international community.
