Kenyan police on the island of Lamu are searching for an Italian man who, it's alleged, planned to marry a young local man in a lavish ceremony at the town hall last week.

Lamu elders complained about the plans to police, who arrested the local man and three organisers.

Homosexuality is illegal in Kenya, but a BBC correspondent there says there have many secret homosexual weddings on Lamu. Our correspondent says an Italian businessman was expelled from Lamu in the 1980s for organising an international homosexual workshop there. Last week, President Moi denounced homosexuality as a scourge that went against Christian teachings and African tradition. President Museveni of Uganda has also recently condemned the practice.
