A group of former Mau Mau fighters, who took up arms to campaign for Kenya's independence from Britain in the 1950s, has made a multi-billion-dollar compensation demand for alleged human rights abuses carried out by the colonial administration.

The fighters, who call themselves the Mau Mau Original Group, say they'll file a lawsuit on behalf of hundreds-of-thousands of former Mau Mau fighters and civilians unless London agrees to pay. The group is asking for eight-billion dollars. Talking about the period in question, the group's chairman, Joseph Karani, said there'd been a lot of detentions, torture, rapes, confiscation of property, enslavement, enforced resettlement, and unjustified taxation.
