SA presidential aide mugged
South Africa policeman confronts suspect
South Africa has one of the highest violent crime rates
A South African presidential spokesman was carjacked in Pretoria, just hours after President Thabo Mbeki talked about positive trends in the fight against crime in the country.

Presidential spokesman Bheki Kumalo was attacked on Tuesday by nine gunmen who stole his car, a BMW, outside the home of a friend in Pretoria.

Mr Kumalo, who was unhurt, said he was thankful to be alive and spoke highly about government efforts to combat crime in the country.

"My belief in the security forces of this country is unshaken," said Mr Kumalo after the attack.

President Mbeki had earlier said at a news conference that police statistics to be released next month were likely to show "the trend of reduction and stabilisation in priority crimes".

On Friday, Deputy Public Works Minister Musa Zondi was held up by gunmen along with his driver and bodyguard.

The attackers stole money and his car.

South Africa has one of the highest levels of violent crime in the world.
