| Monday, February 1, 1999 Published at 23:46 GMT World: Africa Shell evacuates Nigerian oil terminal A spokesman for the multinational oil company, Royal Dutch Shell, in Nigeria says its oil terminal in the Niger delta will be fully operational again by today Tuesday -- after serious clashes between local youths and Nigerian security forces forced its closure. The company temporarily evacuated staff from the terminal on Saturday following the confrontations in which up to nineteen people were killed. Reports say the fighting began after people turned up at the terminal seeking money and jobs. Local groups have long been demanding a greater share of Nigeria's oil wealth and there have been serious disturbances before. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
